Title: Recommend Encoders for arduino
Post by: vipulan12 on March 07, 2013, 05:57:07 PM
Hey, Can anyone please  recommend encoders that could be used for the arduino
thanks :D

Sure! The LiCal ENC ls001 is a data encoder with 5V signalling available in PDIP package compatible with Arduinos and breadboards.

Thanks,
but are there any tutorials for this device?

vipulan12,
Did you google and look up the encoder jwatte listed?
Did you know what it does? and does it fit your needs?

Really, jwatte is pulling your leg by answering the exact question you asked (propably its the first encoder that poped into his head when reading the question, is this correct jwatte?).

There are many, many type of encoders so you need to tell us what you what the encoder to do.

Close :-)

I agree it may or may not be the kind of encoder the original poster needs. The reason I recommended it was to get the poster to look it up, and then either say "yes, this will work" or "no, that's not the kind of encoder I need; I need an encoder that does X" so that we can then perhaps help for real.

Not quite "pulling your leg" as much as "subtly guiding towards enlightenment" :-)

I just wanted to buy an encoder so i could better understand how they work and how to apply them
I would be going for the cheapest one that would be compatible with arduino
thats the only reason I want one (learning experience)

Again what is it you want to ENCODE???
A motor shaft speed? or position?
Compressing a digital Video stream?
A rotary multi-position switch?
Other data?

Any of these encoders can be used on an arduino.

Did you bother to GOOGLE "Encoder" to see what this term means?
Did you try reading through the many threads in the SoR forum to learn what encoders peole here are using and for what purpose?

sorry for not specifying which i want but how about an encoder that measures position of the motor?
I did search it up but not very thoroughly(sorry) :(
and what do you mean by Compressing a digital Video stream and A rotary multi-position switch?

thanks for the reply   :D

OK, position of a Motor.
I'll guess that your really mean the rotational position of a motor shaft in either degrees or some sub-division of one rotation. Is this what you want??

One type is a disk with black/while radial strips and a reflective light sensor. The wheel can be printed in various patterns to "encode" information. See this:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Robotics/Feedback_Sensors/Encoders (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Robotics/Feedback_Sensors/Encoders)

A multi-position rotary switch can work the same way.
Here are some that are available (select one and click on the part number, then click on the data sheet for details about that switch)

Here are a number of video encoders/decoders:

And here is a selection of "encoders":
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=encoder (http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=encoder)
Do you see any that will do what you need?
