to program the $50 robot i understand that you need a programmer. the avr isp something or other... my question is can you make one yourself? and lastly, is there a board inside the programmer?

There is a kit: http://www.ladyada.net/make/usbtinyisp/index.html

But schematics and parts list are provided in case you want to just buy the stuff yourself.

I would just save the trouble and buy the kit instead of gathering your own parts, etc. It's probably cheaper since you'll have to buy from at least two places (adafruit to buy the preprogrammed chip, and an electronics site for other parts), and adafruit can get the components for cheap since they buy in bulk.

Hi,

Here are the two most proven (with a lot of followers)

IC-Prog http://www.ic-prog.com/
And PonyProg http://www.lancos.com/prog.html
Regards,
Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
