Microcontroller Help
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:12:13 PM »
Hi...

I just began soldering the $50 robot board... but i failed. I tried my best and went slow and all that but i am just having some problems. I now want to just buy a microcontroller so i can save some time and money. I looked at the roboduino but im not sure if i should buy the fully assembled one or the  kit. I dont quite understand the extent of what the assembly requires. So basically if you could help me figure out which one to buy or if there is a different microcontroller that would be better you could tell me that.

Thanks for your help.

I bought the roboduino assembled version and kinda regret it because i could solder well.
If your soldering is very bad, go for that option.
The roboduino is great for beginners, really just plug in and play.
I wouldn't suggest the arduino as its just too much trouble to get going with robotics.

Ok thanks... Is there any special software or wires that I will need to connect it to my computer and to program it?

You will need to download arduino software if you don't have/don't want to use a hardware programmer.
Windows: http://arduino.googlecode.com/files/arduino-0018.zip
Mac: http://arduino.googlecode.com/files/arduino-0018.dmg
Linux: http://arduino.googlecode.com/files/arduino-0018.tgz
The roboduino comes with a usb cable, this is all you will need to program it if you use arduino software.

Damn man, your camera needs some bad-ass glasses or something!
But have you tried desoldering braid or a solder sucker?

If you can't find solder braid, try this: Find some fine-stranded, heavy gauge wire and use the solder of your connection to 'tin' the wire.

Use a stranded wire that has a lot of very fine copper strands. What some call zip cord or lamp cord that is used for making/repairing lamps. Many hardware stores carry this. Strip off a centimeter or half inch of the insulation. Dip it in liquid flux if you have any. Then heat the solder and the cord on your connection. Some of the solder will be transferred from your connection to the wire.

Hopefully enough is removed to be a benefit.

The good ones should have it, some of the newer ones don't.

Turn it on and see... Pops, generally aren't good but the only real way to tell is to turn it on.
If something bad happens, unplug it...
