Title: prob regarding legged robot

hi,
m building a 4 legged robot robot and wanted to know that for the legs could i use geared dc motors/dc motor instead of servos.what are the advantages of servos over geared dc?pls help as i m a beginner

also i wnt 2 ask hw many motrs wil b reqd per leg 4 a robot dat cn walk st. n also turn left n rite n cn also turn bak in case it hs al 3 sides blokd.. pls help asap...

before building legged robots you should read at least a little about degrees of freedom, that will pretty much clear how many servos you need for each leg.

for a toy robot that can turn and walk you can even start with 1 servo/leg but I think you will get good results with 4servos/leg. The problem is, 4 servos require a complex logic and you must be able to program that.

Also, the difference between a servo and a geared dc motor is that with the servo you can specify the position for each motor. With a geared DC you can only make it turn.

Servos come with gears and control electronics while DC motors usually do not (if it did, then it would be a servo).

The main advantage to a servo for a walking robot is that it already has built in position control done for you.
