motor selection
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:53:24 PM »
So I built a r2d2, I was originally going to make it into a custom case mod. Now I want to make it mobile. I can't seem to find information on what motors to use. I would like it to move at about 4 - 4.5 fps, it can have a Max wheel diamater of 6 inches, and he weighs aprox 30lbs with all equipment in him. I will be using a arduino board with a ro-bot-x shield used in to either a labtop or a motor xoom to control him via pc-pc connection. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you

Hi,

I would like it to move at about 4 - 4.5 fps, it can have a Max wheel diamater of 6 inches,
With 6 inch diameter wheels, you'll then need a motor speed of 153...172 RPM

[...] weighs aprox 30lbs [...]
Still with the 6 inch wheels (and two motors in a differential steer setup), shoot for a motor with a stall torque of 160 ozf-inch or better.

To sum up:
At least 153 RPM (for 4fps) and a torque of at least 160 ozf-inch with 6" wheels.

Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
Engineering is based on numbers - not adjectives
