Title: The importance of a clean workspace
Post by: gamefreak on January 13, 2008, 01:02:29 PM
Hey, I for one do not have a clean workspace, I have parts scattered, tools lying around, and have finished projects, behold the almighty power of, my workbench!!!(conveniently located in scenic: my basement, where soldering, desoldering, and injuries are common)

you may notice that the image kind of cracks and overlaps in two places, my camera has a panorama mode that allows me to take 3 pics and make them into one long one.

I've always had trouble keeping my workspace clean, especially if I'm the only one using it.

Currently I have divided my workspace up into three parts . . . electronics bench, mechanical work bench, and random junk bench.

I find having drawers, and labels printed on those drawers, encourages me to put stuff in a proper place and keep it there.

A side story . . . at the CMU robotics club we always had like 20-40 people always using the workspace and making messes . . . it was so bad that most people didn't even know there were 'keep workspaces clean' labels taped to the table tops cause of the clutter . . .

Then one day someone got the genious idea of taping big pics of bikini clad women to the tables . . . suddenly the tables were much cleaner ;)
but someone took offense to it and tore them up :'(

lol, that great

My desk has drawers that are filled with more stuff, my desk is packed with all kinds of random things, its great, it stays clean for 10 minutes, then is covered again when i need 3 differnt books, 5 tools, and about 20 compartments open.

If you put things away when you are done with them it helps you find it quicker and saves time in the long run. Also it prevent you from being lazy and cutting aluminum sheets with wiring tools (so that you can no longer cut wire efficiently).

Once you get into the habit its not hard to maintain a clean work bench.

My desk was always notoriously cluttered.
Then I was fed up with PCB malfunctioning due to shortcuts by metal parts under the PCB lying on my desk,  not finding stuff , etc...
So I decided it was enogh, and I had a BIG cleanup. It took me a long while, but it was worth it.

I bought some storage with small compartments and placed our old kitchen cabinets in my room, a few boxes here and there, ...
Now I still have a pretty clean workspace.

I really advise anyone to do this to
