Years ago, my mom's work was throwing this thing away, and knowing that I love all things electronics, she asked me if I wanted it.
I said HECK yeah. So it's been sitting in my basement ever since. From what I can gather, it's an old tape deck computer backup device. There are two readers down the bottom and slots for the tapes above them, and a device to move tapes into the readers. When I opened it up, I immediately thought, DIY CNC MILL!! But I don't know if the motors are stepper motors. I did see the nice plastic threaded rods though. Those are pretty cool.
So, before I tear into this thing, can anyone identify it and tell me if I should try to salvage stuff from it? I'm assuming it's very outdated technology. I think I had one of the tapes before. I think they were 2 gigs a piece or something? Not very much. And I'm sure you could buy three or four redundant hard drives now-a-day that would replace this thing for cheaper.
Here are the pics. (Oh, it does still work too.)
