Title: Arduino Problem...
Post by: AdvsNoob on May 17, 2009, 11:59:03 PM
I had this new arduino for a while noe and everything is working great but all of a sudden when i plug in my servo the arduino powers off.... and everything stops working...

When i unplug the servo everything powers on..

Did something happen? How can i fix it or is it just the servo? Can i fix that?

are the servos moving?

No the arduino power goes off and everything stops working including the servo

no, i meant are the servos moving when you start it up... servos may be drawing too much current from battery thus making the voltage go down therefore shutting down the arduino

I don't think you understand... iwhen the servo is plugged in.. Nothing works the servo never moves or anything.. I had the servo in before and it worked before.  But for some reason is that its not working now

1) I would test the servo to see if the ground and power line are shorted.  Use a multimeter to determine continuity.

2) How much stuff do you have plugged into the arduino.  You could be drawing too much current.

3) Servos normally spaz when they are first plugged in.  This is what I think smash was reffering to.

4) How do you have the servo hooked up?

Not a lot of things plugged into it 2 leds ping sensor and the servo

Ill try the multimetor thing

my guess is that your servo is dead and is shorting 5v and gnd.

yeah, that would sound about right...
test +5v and gnd while all sensors are plugged in but arduino is off and see if anything is shorted.

A top rule for debugging robots: if it always worked, then suddenly stops working when using high powered devices, 99% chance your battery needs to be recharged.

You definitely need to buy a multimeter! ;D

as my electronics teacher always tells me,
"a handy mans no. 1 tool is his hammer just like him an electricians no. 1 tool is his multimeter"
you will never succeed without one...
