50$ robot augmented microcontroller doesn't work :S
« on: October 17, 2008, 12:47:49 AM »
Hey people,

me and my mate build the augmented microcontroller exactly like the tutorial told us to do. Then, when we thought we were finished, we tested it by simply putting 1 V on it and working our way up to 6,5.  But somewhere around 5,5 or 6 V we heart pats, it sounded a little like popcorn. The voltage regulator also got really really hot and it smellt pretty bad.
Now we don't know what went wrong or what we should do to fix this.
Please help us!

Loud pops should not happen, but if it was a small crackling noise then it would lead me to believe that somewhere something is shorting and causing sparks, this would also cause the voltage regulator to get hot, but do you have any pics of your board, bottom, top, and how the supply is wired to it?
All hail Rodney, the holy 555 timer
And Steve said: "Let there be lead!"

Sounds like a short circuit somewhere
