Telephone to Computer
« on: November 03, 2007, 10:05:31 PM »
Hey guys,

Any ideas of how to connect a cell phone to a computer or to get a free internet phone line?

What I want to do is to control a robot( which is connected to a computer)  through a cell phone . Basically call that number and then dial in numbers to do certain tasks.

Im thinking using DMTF and just decoding the tone signals....

Example:
1. User calls 123-4567 ( robots phone number)
2. User dials in code to do command such as 12 to open front door, etc.
3. Robot obeys command   :D

Now how do i do step 2?  I mean, if I were to dial 123-4567 and then dial 12 would it go to telephone number 123-456712 which does not exist or perhaps it will stay connected to 123-4567 and the robot will hear the extra 12 being dialled

Any ideas???

By the way: Emailing the robot or texting the robot is not what I'm talking about. Plain calling.

Or even better : How good is the voice recognition from a phone?
Time to do some tests......   ;)

I think the main problem is answering the phone, right?
If it was me I'd get a solenoid to push the answer button when it rings (maybe light sensor when the backlight/ring light comes on). That way you can easily change phones and don't destroy it. Or just wire into the answer button directly. Wire a DTMF decoder into the speaker wires to listen to tones.

More proper tho, and a lot easier if you can find out, would be to look up how the handsfree interface works and plug into that.

After the phone has answered, buttons you press will be sent as sounds to the other end. Just like when you call an automated service.

Which would work better,    speech recognition through the phone or DMTF?

Probably DMTF, but do you think there will be an accuracy of 95% over the phone for speech recognition?

I think you should use speech recognition just because it's cooler. If it doesn't work, it'll be a doddle to convert to DTMF.

Some automated answering services use speech recognition, so it's certianly pretty robust nowdays - tho I can't say they've ever understood my voice :P
