Hi,

You can get a set with a small transmitter (a little larger than the CR2032 lithium coin cell that drives it) and a receiver a little larger than a match box.
DealExtreme.com may have it and it's so cheap that you cannot get near that price trying to make something equal to it yourself.

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
