Title: Super small distance sensor???
Post by: Brandon121233 on August 14, 2008, 07:37:47 PM
Hey guys
I have been searching Google for about 3 hours now and I'm not getting anywhere so I though I might ask if anyone knows of any super small distance sensor. It needs to be about 10mm X 5mm or smaller. Furthermore I would really prefer it use less than 100mA and have a range of at least 6 inches. I have found sharps SMD IR proximity sensor but it hogs a lot of power and it too big. I was kind of leaning in the direction of ultrasonic since it uses less power for having a longer range, but I can use either or. Price is not an issue and if i come to the last straw i will probably end up buying some smd transducers and make my own. Thanks in advance and I will keep searching Google!

Hi,

Sharp make more rangefinders than what are usually used. such as this: http://uk.farnell.com/1618437/optoelectronics/product.us0?sku=sharp-gp20d310k (http://uk.farnell.com/1618437/optoelectronics/product.us0?sku=sharp-gp20d310k)

GP2Y0D310K
Its dimensions are 8.7mm x 15mm . (100cm detection range) Its a bit bigger than what you want but im sure they do smaller ones.

heres the search page of the ones farnell stock:
http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=500005+1002436&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=sharp&Ntx= (http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=500005+1002436&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=sharp&Ntx=)
The smallest on there is  6.5 x 13.6mm (60cm detection range). Though im sure they make smaller than this too...

I noticed on that search page that they also do a dust sensor!

Give Keyence a look.  I have used them in industrial applications.
