new forum Karma system implemented
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:45:33 PM »
I have decided to experiment with a 'Karma' system to encourage better posting.

On the left of every post, above every user's icon, you'll see:

Helpfullness: 1
[good] [bad]

The basic rule is that when someone makes a useless or bad post, click that 'bad' button. When they help you out, click that 'good' button.

If you feel neutral, or no strong feelings, don't click anything.

If someone tries hard to help you out but it still doesn't solve your problem, either click nothing or click 'good'.

You can only 'vote' on a person at most about once a day so you aren't really voting on any particular post but instead the longer term help they've given out (such as an entire thread over a period of a few days).

Oh and don't use it as a method of revenge! Sometimes people just have a bad day and forget to use smiley faces ;D

There are no benefits to having a really good karma and you won't be banned for having a bad karma. Its just an ego thing, and a way to thank those who help you.

Anyway, if you have any opinions of this new system just reply here. I might tweak it a bit depending on suggestions.

edit: Thinking about it for a bit, I made a slight change to the system so it only shows sum total Karma, and not both good and bad votes. You will have a positive count as long as you are more useful than useless :P

I didn't want the new system to appear too negative!

Also, you are allowed to vote people down if they break the basic forum guidelines:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=602.0
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=1480.0

But please be kind to new members!

i think this is a good idea in that people will say whether a post is good or not. BUT it is a very bad idea because you are judging people and that is just not right :-\ Forum rules liike Double-post?

I think the option to rate someone bad will cause a lot of arguments and things... it should be taken out, so you just get the ratings for how much good stuff you do. I can see some members electing themselves as the forum police and rating anyone bad if they don't have a good title or double post (which in some cases is okay if you want to revive your old thread, etc). Then there will be a lot of threads about people asking "Who gave me this bad ratingz???"

I agree with you.... but....
Should everyone say whatever they have in mind.... I mean than misinformation is worse than not knowing....
a negative karma can work as, I must think before I post... And this is not only helpful but healthy for the forum...
For this reason it's better to have both negative and positive karma active....

I've seen it at a forum that they have a bar of karma... red are bad replies and green are good...
And the bar actually was showing how trustworthy is that person and his behavior on the forum...

Nobody is gonna get bad karma if he says that: Hey, I feel that this is better for you, but I'm not sure so check....
But if someone says: Hey dude use this.... and he is at fault why to thinks worse.........

It's not a matter of police playing here, it's a matter of the quality of knowledge this forum produces

That's the optimum way, and how it's supposed to be done. But what about the people who don't follow that, people who want to get back at people they don't like or people who think they are doing good by rating them bad for double posting or other insignifcant things.

Good Karma points will never be questioned. Bad Karma points will - and could be misused.

Perhaps just get rid of the 'Bad' button altogether. May also help out with some mis-clicks as those two little links are fairly close to each other....

Alternatively: only allow Admin to give out Bad points. This means that if someone triple posts and Admin has to spend ages sorting it all out then he can allocate Bad Points rather than you getting 50 from 50 different people for the same reason.  eg a good posting may Help lots of people, but a bad posting is just 'one bad posting'.

Ok I removed the bad button. Some people have uncontrollable egos :P

I also reworded it a bit:
Helpful?
[click for yes]

If you guys can think of a better wording, I'm all microphones! (ok sorry, bad robot joke . . .)

Hmm - thats odd.

Underneath the 'Helpful' it should say 'Click for yes' - except against your own postings.

Underneath the "Helpful? 1"

I see just the Online status and no "Click for yes" thing.

I am not talking about my own, but of others's.

How about now? I just tweaked a setting . . .

It appears to be some bug affecting non-default groups in the forum, ie 'Contest Winners' . . .
