What can be recycled from a used Portable DVD Player
« on: October 07, 2009, 09:04:26 AM »
I have a portable DVD player that my roommate is getting rid of. I'm not sure what's  wrong with it. I was wondering what could be recycled from it for use in other robotics projects and if its worth my time to even mess with. Anyone know what items I could get out of it for reuse later?

yeah the stepper motor that drives/moves the laser and some of the mechanics may be worth a look, like the springs and catches.

there may be something in there that we haven't mentioned so i think it is worth a look.  :D

Yeah, portable dvd players dont really have much to offer to us :-\
Unless your into smd desoldering, motors are your best bet.

There may be a motor and gears to move the tray in and out. Good parts.
Also another motor and gears to move the read head (LASER). Along with a head guide rods.

Maybe some connectors and caps along with tiny resistors and diodes on the PCB.

Not a lot but if the unit is dead then well worth taking apart to learn.

actually i've found it very rare that opticle drives (although this is based off of 5 inch drivss) will have a stepper motor in it. usually they have geared motors.  you can actually use the mechanism from the laser track for a cheap linear actuator. the button that you clip cds onto can be used as cheep wheel hubs for cd wheels. other then that you can always blast the back of the board with a propane torch to get the parts :P
