Robot Base
« on: July 14, 2007, 09:46:32 PM »
I need a motorized base that is around 2ft by 2 1/2 ft. It should be able to move at least 80 pounds at a speed of about 3 mph. Also the front wheels should be casters and the back wheels should be individually motorized.
Anybody know where I can get a ready made  base or where to hack it from?
(maybe the Q-chariot?http://www.legioncontrols.com/qelchusgrde.html)

ok, let me be a little more specific.
I need a base 2ft by 2ft( around that) with two motorized wheels and casters. It should hold around 40 lbs(not 80) and should be able to move on carpet.
Any ideas???

well, you are going to need some pretty strong motors:
http://www.merkle-korff.com/dc_brush_gearmotors.asp?id=27
check out those. You won't need the strongest of course, but search for the one on that page that is right for you.
you are also going to need a pretty thick and strong base. For material in 2x2 squares, I recommend:
www.mcmaster.com
now the wheels... once again I recommend mcmaster, but look up:
2829T54
these wheels are very strong yet pretty cheap. you may want to get larger ones, depending on the thickness of your base.
and finally castors.... this should do nicely:

but that would also mean that your whhels need to be larger, unless you can improvise.
Hope I helped!

three thousand??? Why would it be so much. Hacking a Q chariot( $500) or an electric wheelchair(also around $500) would produce my intended base.

The cheapest method would be to make it yourself from scratch :P

The most expensive is to get it commercially, which is what you asked for ;D

Hacking a wheelchair would be middle ground . . .
