I've finished my first robot!

I just finish my first "robot" yesterday. Technically its not robot because its not autonomous (yet), but I've finished it none the less. The chassis is ply wood, the wheels are cds, the microcontroller is an Arduino, and the motors are modified hs-311s.
What should be my nest step? Should I add an IR range finder or make make it a photovore?

if you don't have any on hand, photodiodes/resistors are cheaper than sharp IR rangefinder.

Not all robots are autonomous, as long as they can do something they are a robot, the word robot comes from a word that means slave or forced labour or somthing if i remember rightly =D. My first robot (which i am starting soon) will be a photovore, as they are suppost to be one of the best first robots (although RC are easier)

Can we please get a picture or video of the electronics of your robot? I would like to see the way you connected the servos.


Look for the $50 robot with roboduino. It has a link to a tutorial on how to connect photoresistors to make it autonomus. I am starting my robot soon.

Please take at least some pictures of the electronics and post them!
I'm out of ideas!

The sharp IR range finders are actually pretty advanced. They use a CCD chip to process the information. You're better of just making a IR proximity detector. It just tells if there is anything in front of it, and it will most probably have a horrible range. But they are quite easy and cheap to make :)

Couldn't I just have an IR LED thats always on and an IR receiver that measures the light intensity, so that when there's no reflected light there's nothing in front of it, but when the receiver detects reflected light there'd something in front of it?

If you use Roboduino the servos will plug straight in.

If you using an Arduino you need to use the type of four connection usb cable thats used with most printers (I think its called a mini usb). If you bring it to the people at radio shack they can probably help you.
