Title: What parts of a Game Cube could be used for parts?
Post by: MaztorShake on May 26, 2011, 08:59:57 AM
As the title suggests.
I have a old gamecube that I don't play anymore and I gave all the games away. Any ideas on what I could possibly use parts from the Game Cube for?

cdrom motor/laser, power supply, passive components...for what its worth, it would be cool to have a game cube shaped bot, use the case =)

Well thats the thing. I'm still new to robotics. I did however go to school for basic electronics.

If its still working , I would love to buy it  ;) sadly I don't have the money and you need the parts more.
If you're into programming, you can do some homebrew and use it as a brain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homebrew_%28video_games%29#Nintendo_GameCube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homebrew_%28video_games%29#Nintendo_GameCube)

486MHz CPU
43 MB total RAM (split to different sub systems)
The CPU is 128bit (I think)
Its small
Its purple and cool lookin'
You can have cool video displays on a television
The CPU is mad by IBM
The controller can be hacked and used for input.
[insert other cool stuff]

In other words: You can make on hell of a robot 8)
No need to open it if its workin' ;)

How about SD card adaptor...
Anyway the best parts would be the laser diode , plugs/sockets , case , buttons , etc.
The CPU is most likely useless without the rest of the 'cube.
Take out the RAM chips someone might buy them on eBay, or you could Google the part numbers and see if they can be attached to a micro controller.
Desolder the entire board  ;)

Happy Hunting ;)

How do you go about identifying the different parts and componets?

I only know alil, but that's because I took a introductory class on electronic engineering in tech school. But I plan on using google and forums. Take a pic and upload it to get answers. Thats what Ima do.

the power supply is really good.  12v and it has got a couple of amps.  I have mine currently powering a pair of windshield motors.
