what's the name of this shaft?

this is what it looks like. is there a special name for this? i'd like to stick a wheel right onto the end of it bit i'm having trouble finding one with the right connection since i don't know what it's called

it's all round but one side is slightly flat. it's not quite half way through

yep, that would most likely be a "D-shaft"...
look around at some other d-shafts in google and see if they look the same to confirm.

You'll want to measure the diameter of the round part of the shaft, as that is what the wheels need to match.  For example 3mm and 6mm are common sizes.

yep that would be it. there doesn't seem to be many wheels that use that type of shaft though. i've managed to modify some old wheels to fit the these motors though

you need to buy hubs ususally, lynxmotion sells them for 3 and 6 mm shafts

Where I work we have many shafts like that.  You use a standard wheel for it.  The flat part is for a set screw.  A lot of our encoders have shafts like that and the cog wheel fits on the end.  The flat part is so that the cog wheel sets better and does not slip.

just ordered some 6mm hubs for these guys. i ordered them from another site since they were cheaper with shipping though.
