Title: WALL WARTS AND LOW DC CURRENTS
Post by: shyamgenious on October 25, 2011, 12:10:14 AM
IVE GOT A WALL WART WITH FOLLOWING SPECIFICATIONS

INPUT:100-240V=50-60Hz
OUTPUT:12VDC 1A
AND THE WARNING FOR USE WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT ONLY !

CAN I USE IT FOR OTHER PURPOSES LIKE USING IT AS A BATTERY WITH CONTINUOUS VOLTAGE TO RUN SMALL THINGS LIKE TOY MOTORS AND LEDS??
COULD I ATLEAST HOOKUP A CPU COOLER FAN OF SPECIFICATIONS

NOISE LEVEL 16DBA
FAN SPEED 2500-2800 10% RPM
FAN DIMENSIONS 80X80X25 MM

REGARDS
SHYAMGENI

You can use it for anything that runs on 12V and does not consume more than 1A.

THATS A VERY STRAIGHTforward answer! ??? ??? ???i wante dto know wether i could use it for smaller things like bulbs and leds and motors all less than 2volts!not INCLUDED IN "IFORMATION TECHNOLOGICAL USES".

Hi,

THATS A VERY STRAIGHTforward answer! ??? ??? ???
And 100% correct :)

i wante dto know wether i could use it for smaller things like bulbs and leds and motors all less than 2volts!not INCLUDED IN "IFORMATION TECHNOLOGICAL USES".
An LED is (sort of) information technology - it can inform you if a piece of equipment is on or similar.
You shouldn't worry too much over the "for IT only" sentence. That's a way to avoid lawsuits if someone use it eg. medical use and someone dies, or if it's taken outdoors and shorts out etc.

It will drive a 12V bulb of max. 12W.
With a series resistor of 470 Ohms to 2.2 kOhm, it can drive an LED.
Lower than 12V bulbs can be driven in the same way, if the correct series resistor is calculated, but then the resistor has to be able to sustain the current without burning.

You could make a variable regulator, following the output, with an LM317 to get a variable output voltage from ~1.25V to around 9V.

Please lay off the CAPS LOCK key, no reason to yell!

You should read some tuts on basic electronics before setting something on fire. Have a play with Circuit Simulator (http://www.falstad.com/circuit/#%24+1+5.0E-6+10.20027730826997+50+5.0+50%0Av+192+384+192+64+0+0+40.0+5.0+0.0+0.0+0.5%0Aw+192+64+288+64+1%0Aw+288+64+384+64+0%0Aw+384+64+480+64+0%0As+288+64+288+144+0+0+false%0As+384+64+384+144+0+1+false%0As+480+64+480+144+0+0+false%0Ar+288+144+288+208+0+100.0%0Ar+384+144+384+208+0+400.0%0Ar+480+144+480+208+0+800.0%0Aw+288+208+384+208+0%0Aw+384+208+480+208+0%0Aw+384+240+384+208+0%0Aw+384+240+480+240+0%0Aw+384+240+288+240+0%0As+384+240+384+320+0+0+false%0As+288+240+288+320+0+1+false%0Ar+288+320+288+384+0+600.0%0Ar+384+320+384+384+0+200.0%0As+480+240+480+384+0+1+false%0Aw+192+384+288+384+0%0Aw+288+384+384+384+0%0Aw+384+384+480+384+0%0A) to get better understanding (under Circuits menu You get to choose different diagrams; if you Right Mouse Click inside the simulator window - other components can be added).

I hope You do understand that one wire is Positive(+) and the other wire is Ground(0) - same as terminals of the battery - one + and one 0.

Perhaps you should read your own footer...

Yes, based on your posts in this thread, I think any reader have decided which you are ;)

Read some tutorials on your subject, then experiment and if you have any questions, please try to sound coherent, because your posts doesn't make sense as is.

I take it you've removed the metallic end plug, and are now left with a wall wart that has a 2 wires going out of it to nothing.

What color are the wires? (If you're lucky, one will be red, the other black.)

No one's calling you a nut  ;D But simply trying to gauge the level of your knowledge in regards to electronics  ;)

In hindsight, it may have been a better option to leave the metal plug bit on it, and buy a jack to plug it into for your project/s (as in most cases it'll have shown on the wall wart the Ground and the Positive in relation to the metallic plug)
