mobile phone camera

would it be possible to take the camera from a phone and use it as a sensor in a robot

that's just the camera... you will need all the circuitry that can create the signals (like a CMUcam, for example), then you need to be able to process the video image using software (like roborealm, for example).

Actually, that camera module seems to integrate a controller... It can even do jpeg compression on its own.

the gameboy camera has been used a lot in robots , there are tutorials on the net on how to hack it
its black and white camera with low resolution , sutable for micros with small memorys ,,
