Is this a feasible project to do for a final year manufacturing/mechanical engineering student?
How would i go about controlling the arm?
-
Yes that would be a good project for a final year project.
one way of controlling the arm would be with a joy stick. This is so that you can demonstrate the desig but not have to go through the longer electronics and programming phase of using sensors.
Don't get me wrong it will take quite a bit of electronics to control the arm by joy stick but i think it would be quicker and in the end the people marking and assesing the project could get a better idea of the arms mechanical capability's. You could also use a r/c radio to control the arm or design your own type of youstick.
The second option would be to use sensors and make the arm autonumous. This would involve building all of the electronics or buying all of the electronics adn programming the arm to perform a task.
Overall i think manual control is the way to go but if you are into robotics you may prefer to go with the sensor control.

I think I would try to make the arm autonomous using sensors, probably buying in the electronics and turning it into more of a control and programing project. Does anybody have any tips or know of any web tutorials that might help or even point me in the right direction?

have alook at this

Robotic Arm controlled by my own
it has a name. exoskeleton
control as follows: make a mechanical arm that has the same hinge or rotor points as your own. a prosthetic device
a collar over your shoulder
a hinge at the shoulder for in/out motion
a hinge at the elbow
a cuff at the wrist
a hinge at the wrist
encoders everywhere. robotic arm has motion to match prosthetic arm
you would want to make the length of the forearm and upper arm of the encoder prosthetic arm adjustable, so other people could try it or demo it.
like H.A.L.
like Sigourney Weaver used to kill the big bug in Alien
Geek trivia:
Write down the letters HAL
underneath those letters, write the next letter of the alphabet.
now you know where that comes from.

Off topic, but the movie geek in me has to chime in :)
A. It's in Aliens, not in Alien.
B. This explanation of the origin of the name HAL is an urban legend. Denied by both Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick.

Actually I meant H.A.L. as in the "Hybrid Assistive Limb" from Cyberdine
