Hello.

Just a few days ago our street had a recycling day, well i decided that I would take a look a other peoples junk. Because...I man's junk is another man's treasure!. Anyway I found a usb cable (it used to be for a MP3 player). I chopped the end off (the side were you plug it into the MP3) and found five wires there was a

Red
Black
Green
White
Non insulated wire (silver)

I look on the net to discover the green, white and non insulated wires were data wires and the red and black were power ones. I also found out that USB gives 5 V by 1.5 A

Soon I had made my USB charger (I know you can buy them in shops, but c'mon this is sooo much more fun!) It now charges my $50 robot batteries.

I am very pleased with my discoveries!

yea usb cables are realy useful i atached 1 to my xbox controler so that i could use a mp3 as a xbox memery device

I don't know whether the silver wire is data transfer...
It probably is ground...

USB has only 2 data wires D+ and D- ....

And I also know that USB won't supply the 1A5 without knowing a device is mounted...

Anyways, can you share schematics...

DONT KNOW ABT USB'S BUT YES I HAVE DO NOTICES THAT WHEN U ATTACH MP3 PLAYERS OR PHONES TO UR PC VIA USB , THE BATTERY STARTS CHARGING

AND MAY BE U HAVE JUST DISCOVERED A WAY TO HARNESS IT IN A BETTER WAY ....

Please tell me you are using decent diode protection so you don't fry your computer 
A flash drive broke off in one of my friends usb ports and shorted it out and the thing wouldn't boot until he finally realized there was a bunk drive in his port lol.

AFAIK the computer doesnt need to realize soemthing is plugged in, for it to give power to that drive.

the power pins on the usb drive are longer than the data pins, so that when you insert it, the chips get power before sending data

Maybe I should upgrade my charger ie. Add a diode...
