two wheel balancing robot

Hi ,
I am building a robot which is balanced on two wheel , i want suggestion if i need to use gyroscope ?   i plan to balance it on wheel with the entire weight evenly placed . What kinda wheels , and motors should i go for ? i plan to have 3 3/4 " diameter wheel . Can any one give me some suggestion.

you could use a gyroscope but you could also use a Sharp IR sensor pointed towards the ground. you could then measure the distance from the ground. here's how it would work with Sharp IR, when you tilt backwards the sensor would be farther from the ground and if you tilted forwards the sensor would be closer to the ground. assuming that the sensor is on the front of your robot.
gyroscopic sensor could be $60+ while Sharp IR sensors cost $10.

I am trying out a structure which is stable when not acted upon by force , I have seen robots that are stable dynamically . Any idea on this one ?

i don't know but I think you should have digital servos instead of analog, digital is more accurate than analog.
