Dangers in taking apart a dvd player.
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:31:41 PM »
I want to take apart a dvd player to do something like a this http://www.instructables.com/id/Awsome-50-diy-projector-well-for-me/ . Is there anything, besides capacitors, that I have watch out for so I don't kill myself.

(unplugging it is kind of a no-brainer)

The most dangerous component would probably be the diode, but since it will not be powered???? when you crack it open, you should be fine. Also, you should check where the transformer is, and what voltage it runs on.

Why would a diode be dangerous?

DVD players use a laser diode... and these are very dangerous because they operate on the 600nm wavelength, which is invisible to us, so you could have it turned on and it be shining directly into your eye, and you wouldnt know it until you become blind

careful :)

Hi,

rofl, but do vcr's have laser diodes?

Nope, not unless you put them there.

rofl, but do vcr's have laser diodes?

i thought we were talking about dvd readers?

and no... vcrs are similar to an analogue signal, using sensors to read the em tape, and dvds are digital using diodes to read the em...
