Post by: michael1st on April 18, 2007, 05:42:55 PM
hi im from U.K, northern ireland to be exact  ;D and i am having a hard time trying to find a place that i can join that will help me start building robots. to be fair im only 16, but i do know enough about the very basics of circuirty. i was also wondering if us knew of anywer wer i cud get free samples sent to me cos the other ones alrdy posted either make absolutely no sense or dnt ship to me :'(. also can u tell me wat exactly i will need to build a simple bot wit jus free samples for electronics.

I just received some 36v to 5v regulators from maxim and they are so small 3x4mm  :o
here is the parts list
http://www.societyofrobots.com/step_by_step_robot_step1.shtml
a little lower than halfway down, and you will need the $12 programming cable, it's not optional

if you buy over $25 then the $5 handling fee is dropped. When my atmega8 died and I wanted to order one, I bought alot of stuff that might come in handy later, just to avoid that fee.  :P
If you buy everything else there(resistors, caps, headers, etc) for your robot it should come out to $20 and then just get $5 more worth of stuff. but shipping will still be high

i hv also got a few questions for u guys!
1. do u not hv to heat sink an L.E.D or else it will blow?
2. do us use solidworks for ur designing/

also i dnt kno if it was sarcasm or wat but i noticed u didnt kno wat a PCB is. it is simply a Printed Circuit Board. i noticed also tht us use the perf boards. would it not be simpler to desing ur PCB nd then soldering nd all would be easier plus wit most PCB design progs like LiveWire u can see if ur circuit will wrk without hvin to make it first. i kno i said i dnt kno lot bout electronics but its more the robotics electronics nd all. i can actually use mostt electronics since in my school frm bout the age of 11 u hv to wrk wit them (jus makin simple stuff lik moisture sensors nd all at tht age tho). for my GCSE wrk i designed a circuit usin a 741 comparator tht took in a reading frm a thermistor nd then if the temp was above 80oC nothin happened but wen it dropped below the 741 activated a relay tht turned on any heatin device attached to it. oh btw it was a fancy heat sensor for my bearded dragons tank. i kno this is prob nufin to most of us but i thot i woud jus lets us kno tht i do kno a few wee things bout electronics! ;D

also if sumone cud tell me how to add images i cud show u if u wanted

oh also over here we call 'Photoresistors' LDRs or Light Dependant Resistirs

no need to heatsink leds, just put resistors in serial with them This (http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz) site helps with that.
I have solidworks, but it has a steep learning curve
I know what a pcb is. I use perf board cause it's easier, since all I have is a 150watt soldering gun with a huge blunt tip. ::)
livewire sounds interesting, but all I get is a music download site in google.

PCB's are kinda expensive, and only make sense to do them when you need a lot of them or you need something very small and reliable.

if this doesnt wrk go to google nd then search livewire electronics its the one about simulation nd stuff

Here's a link to a robot group in the UK.

My local group (which I've spent hours working on) has a great resource page

Also this link pretty much has a complete associates degree in electronics free online for people to read
