Title: Laser point into a laser line or several points
Post by: amadcow on February 03, 2009, 02:02:43 PM
Is there any name for a device like this or a location I can find one?

Hi,

Roitner in Germany has got almost anything LASER (in pro quality... and price).
About midway down on this page http://www.roithner-laser.com/Optics-LD.htm (http://www.roithner-laser.com/Optics-LD.htm) are some line optics.

If you want dots, a Gobo is probably the way to go.

What do you wanna do with a line/dots?

so i've got laser lines from 2 places.
first you can find them in most DIY store tool departments. they are used for projecting a line for finding levels.

you can also find them on ebay.
i bought a bunch of laser line modules cheap there.

Yeah, I bought a load of wire ended laser modules about a year ago, from a guy on eBay and he had "lines" as well, but since I had both lines and crosses I didn't tried any of those. The dot modules was cheap and working fine. It was a chinese dealer who also sells high power (1W..5W) LEDs.

Also check http://www.dealextreme.com
They sell laser line modules
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5928   for about $4.  They also sell almost anything else you can think of...lots of it useful for robot building and the prices are pretty good with free shipping.  It comes from China, so it take about 2 weeks to show up, but the prices make it worth the wait.  I've done a couple orders with them including mini webcams for a stereo camera I built, mini servos, and laser modules.  Everything has worked as advertised.

Thanks for the links, it's exactly what I was looking for.

Now I'm beginning to wonder which one would be easier to detect with a camera like CMUcam or blackfin.  Green or Red?  I know it depends on the surface color.  But in general which color would contrast more with most surfaces.
