You can buy Olimex development boards for any sized AVR for roughly $15, its all in a nice pcb with plenty of space to solder headers along with reset button and serial connection.

oh and I saw the bbb, looks really good, and, excuse my noobishness, but what exactly does "comes with a bootloader" mean?

It means that the microcontroller has a bootloader pre-installed, so that you can program it without a hardware programmer.
Think outside the box... inside is to crowded.

A new microcontroller fresh from Atmel has nothing in its flash. In order to put your program into the microcontroller, you need an ISP programmer bit of hardware and software.

A microcontroller with a bootloader has a little program in it already that lets you load your program via the serial port.

This may or may not have an appeal to you.

in addition to the BBB there is this... which is the same as what smash was going to sell to you, but not soldered yet

some people are just Born smart, but some people have to work for it, and those are the people who succeed.

the kit is good because while building the board you learn so much about the mcu... and most people are able to memorize the pins on it... i know i can!

oh! also a quick question. does anyone know where I can get male headers that on one side plug into a breadboard, and on the other lets you plug a servo into it or something. regular ones dont work because one side is too short.

You can also solder two together via their short sides.
