airlines impose new restrictions on lithium batteries
« on: January 03, 2008, 02:20:03 PM »
effective Jan 1st 2008

if you are like me, you will occasionally carry robot batteries when you fly . . .

basically, now you can't pack spare lithium batteries in checked baggage... but you may check equipment with batteries installed. for carry-on the rules probably won't affect you.

kind of makes sence, why build a liquid bomb on a plain when you can get some li-po batteries, and plug them into a larger battery and make a gigantic fire ball

no I did see it and then some others as well but I never thought of using something like that as a weapon. Its annoying because its such a novel invention intended for many good things but theres always someone out there who wants to take anything they can and exploit to hurt as many people as possible. Pisses me off TBH

yep, the world is not a perfect place, and if mankind continue to exist, than it never will be.

I too agree  :(

I think you guys are looking at this the wrong way. They're not worried about people using these as weapons - they're worried about fires starting accidentally onboard the plane. If they were worried about them being used as weapons, they certainly wouldn't let you bring them on in your carry-on...

Yeah - if you have a defective battery (cough Dell cough Apple cough Sony cough cough cough) and it blows and and ignites something in the cargo section of the plane, how are they going to stop it short of grounding the flight?  Even then you have to deal with a ton of damaged/destroyed baggage.  And you better hope you don't get on a flight with a bunch of robot enthusiasts and one bad battery sets off a chain reaction!  :o  The explosions aren't that powerful in the grand scheme of things, but in an unattended cargo hold it could get nasty.

I guess that is a better way to look at it. But still, im sure someone out there has thought of or has tried to use it as a weapon.
