Title: university ads for robotics programs
Post by: Admin on July 08, 2009, 12:49:06 PM
For those who want to know what universities offer robotics:
http://www.expo21xx.com/automation21xx/university.htm (http://www.expo21xx.com/automation21xx/university.htm)

Don't ask a question until you read this:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_faq.shtml#best_robot_college (http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_faq.shtml#best_robot_college)

I still say CMU is the best! :P

No, they aren't only US  ;)

They're from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa... possibly more, but I only looked at the first page on that link  :D

I didn't see any add for this university but I will be applying there after I finish my bachelor's in CS.

I know that UC Merced is a rather small and new UC and probably not a lot of people have heard about them, but it is close to home and since I work at a manufacturing plant where we have just started to integrate industrial robots, I figured that it would be a good fit :)

i know for australia that deakin and monash have mechatronics courses available.
i think also adelaide university has them too?
Monash http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/browse/engineering/?area_of_study_ids=24&course_level_id=2&location_id=0&action=Find+courses (http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/browse/engineering/?area_of_study_ids=24&course_level_id=2&location_id=0&action=Find+courses)
Deakin http://www.deakin.edu.au/scitech/eng/courses/undergraduate.php (http://www.deakin.edu.au/scitech/eng/courses/undergraduate.php)
Adelaide uni (where i think awally88 goes ;D) http://www.adelaide.edu.au/programfinder/ug/eng/ (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/programfinder/ug/eng/)

Satellite campuses, none of which offer robotics or the full multi-disciplinary experience.

I'm going to University of Waterloo in the fall for Computer Engineering. (In fact, I just got my schedule today!) They have a mechatronics engineering program, as well as a mechatronics option, which I also plan on taking (basically it just fills up all your electives with mechatronics courses, but you get it on your degree). Mechatronics is pretty much robotics.

...Plus, they have a sweet robotics club, which I am definitely joining as soon as I get there.

mechatronics is computer science, mechanics and electronics isn't it?
pretty much the three things that make up robotics?

do you need tertiary entrance rank to get in to university in canada other places and not just australia, and if not do they call it somthing else.

I've never heard of tertiary entrance rank...

I think only australia uses it...
All around australia it has different names.
TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) is used south australia, northern territory, western australia and Tasmania.
It is called ENTER (equivalent national tertiary entrance rank) In Victoria
They use OP (overall position) in Queensland
Its called UAI (universities admission index) in new south wales (where i am) and ACT

they're used for entry into most undergraduate-entry university programs, so they are your ticket into uni...
the higher your mark, the better your chances of getting into a decent university.

The assessment mark is that obtained from the internal school examinations a student sits over the last term of year 11 and the three terms of year 12. The school marks are sent to the UAC from the Board of Studies, and from these students are ranked from first to last. The student ranked first is then assigned a moderated assessment mark equal to the highest examination mark scored by that group of students, regardless of who scored it, and similarly the student ranked last will receive the lowest examination mark. The rest of the students have their assessment marks moderated between these two values, with the proportional difference between the marks remaining the same (for instance, the gap of 10 between two marks spread over a range of 20% will be halved if the range is halved to 10%).

So is it kinda like the SAT/ACT here in the US, or is it more like a grade point average?

yes, they are similar... ours is pretty much just a number that defines your high school certificate mark, the higher the better. but damn, yours costs $45k?

College Board claims that the SAT can determine whether or not a person is ready for college. The current SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes and costs $45 ($71 International), excluding late fees.

i think they work it out by adding all of you year 12 percentages and averaging them out to get an over all percent, that is in certain states of Australia

to enter a mechetronics engineering course you need something like 86.8 %, it may have changed,

what is the percentage for similar engineering courses in other australian states and other countries ???

Only Mechanical / Electronics generally, computer science goes into programming a lot more than Mechatronics.

@Australia: Don't worry about understanding the TER/ENTER/OP until you are in your final year, its not worth the effort they are different for every state and I think that the University entrance system is going to be changing over the next few years from the rumours I've been hearing.

For everyone who is going to go to uni contact the universities, they have all the information you will need ;)
