Title: Modifying Servos with the Atmega8 (for $50 bot)

On the $50 dollar robot tutorial, I was using the Atmega8 microcontroller.  It says to tell the servo to send it the zero signal, then adjust the pot until the gears to stop rotating (see step 5 of http://www.societyofrobots.com/actuators_modifyservo.shtml (http://www.societyofrobots.com/actuators_modifyservo.shtml) for details.)  However, I once I stuck this thing onto a breadboard, I realised I had not an idea how to hook it up and the 30 or so pins are actually quite daunting.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a link to a microcontroller tutorial, or if you happen to have the minimum setup handy to implement that hex file that would be great too.

Also... I noticed it says the position pwm will now control the speed.  I realise the resistance of the pot is linked to position, simple enough...  but does it apply more power for distant positions (thus being the reason it goes faster.)?  If someone could clear that up, that would be cool too.
