better 2d mapping
« on: November 05, 2007, 03:50:01 PM »
hey folks, since the sharp IR doesnt have a range of more than 3 meters and the sonar is not one stright bean (it has an angle) i would want to use a laser ranger for my 2d mapping project.
1/anyone can suggest a good sensor (good range + not expensive ) i would be satisfied with 6 meters or more .
i m thinking to install this on a stepper motor and have a reading each step the save these readings into the ram then send them to the computer through the uart(wireless) ..
2/how can i do a little software to show this map?
3/any ideas to mod or add somestuff into this project?
by the way im using the atmega32 and im programin this by C

thanks for any help

This is THE cheapest I'm aware of:

Assuming thats not in your budget . . .

for a homemade version try here:

The mapping part of the code is exactly the same as with the sharp IR method . . .

This is a cheaper Lidar like device that uses IR and does pretty much the same thing as the one Admin posted, but with less angular resolution.
