Title: Junk electronics and identifing them.

Hi i was just wondering if there is any good way of identifing part you found from Ex electronic devices? e.g. the black chips with pins stiking out of them (can never remamber their name).

the name is IC (Integrated Circuit)
And ofcourse there is, you just type the name of the IC (text printed on top of the IC) in google, or in your favorite datasheet site (eg datasheetarchive.org)

ok thanks another quick Question for the IC in the $50 robot dose it have to be that particular one or can it vary a bit.

We can't smell what you mean with " vary a bit"  :-\ ;)
post the exact name of the IC you want to use, and the one it should be.

To answer the Q a little bit more:
Yes it can vary but the further away you vary some the suggested parts, the harder it will be to build the robot because you will start having to ask more questions on compatibility and implementation.

If you find one you think you can use, post the serial number of it on here and we can take a look at it for you to see if it would work.

oh and the more in the back of the name the difference in names is, the more chance you have that it'll be compatible.
If it's one of the first letters/numbers, the odds are against you...

If you took this IC out of a random piece of equipment, with no attention to selection, odds are very low that it's a usable reperogrammable chip.

So what you guys are saying is that... we can take a IC from an old toy...like a RC Car, and it will work on the a microcontroller? That is the vibe i'm getting, as long as you know the Specs of it from a datacataluge... right?

Well it depends on the chip. Thats why you HAVE to know what the chip is before you can start doing anything with it. Each model of chip is different in some ways. You have to know what your doing when it comes to using ICs and such.

BTW Microcontrollers are IC's basically.
