Stepper motor and driver
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:46:47 AM »
Hi all,

If I use a Unipolar stepper motor in a Bipolar configuration, will I loose torque or speed?

I was considering to buy the 23HS32-4008S (link below).

http://www.stepperonline.com/nema-23-cnc-stepper-motor-20nm283ozin-4a-23hs324008s-p-70.html

Will this motor work fine with the DM556 driver? Also, will I be able to get a decent speed with a 32V switch mode power supply?

All kind of help/suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A unipolar stepper (5 wires) cannot be used in bipolar mode. However, the stepper you linked is a bipolar stepper that can be wired as unipolar.

The stepper is rated for 4.0A per phase, so if your power supply can deliver at least 8A, and you use a proper chopping driver, then you should get the best possible rated performance out of that stepper motor.
