OK, I'm only 12 and I like electronics. Anyway, I'm thinking about building a r/c recognizer and I was going to use the parts from an r/c helicopter. I would put the heli's top blade on the top of the recognizer but rotate the tail rotor to the side so it's like in side the thing. But I would cut holes so air could get to it though. Oh yeah, I forgot to say the body would be Styrofoam. Would this work, or should I come up with a different idea for it, or just forget it all together? And would he balance be right like that? Please help :o

I mean, anything's possible... but I'm not sure how stable the thing would be. I think it'd be better if you had dual blades on top. Then again, I've never built a heli before so what do I know. ;D

Ok, If You have one main blade on the top and a smaller one in the leg of that thing, You would olso need something on the other leg to counterbalance weight. Probably best thing to do is to have another small propeller in that other leg. Then You also need some feedback system and a gyro to detect a spin and compensate for it with side props. Also, side props have to have shaft encoders.

Ok so if I buy two helicopters that are exactly the same they should have the same hertz or what ever it's called, right? The balance and weight would be the same too. Then I would have two big and two little Propellers. Is that better

I don't think it's a given that the rotors would spin at EXACTLY the same speed.
I think what you're trying to do is take two helicopters, take them apart and make them into this thing without any programming or the like. I honestly don't think it'll be that easy. For one thing, how do you plan on controlling both at the same time?
Actually, if you had two heli's facing each other on the same controller frequency, it just might work... But I don't know how much they could lift or how the flying dynamics would be...

Why not just get a single RC helicopter, and swap the channels so that it flies sideways? You can then drape some sort of ultra-light covering on it to be the frame (balsa? foam?).

I don't think I understand what you're getting at. And actually normal (cheap) RC helis don't even have tail rotors, just two main rotors that spin at different speeds to make the heli turn.
So maybe just one would work on top? I'm still not convinced it would fly gracefully though.

Ok, I think I'm going to take all of your info and ideas and try it out. It'll probably fail as my first flying RC, but I'll try. I'll post if it works or not. Thanks!

@corrado33: I don't see the advantage in including another rotor into the equation. And a coaxial helicopter would actually be better, in this case, as the rotor could simply be centered (no tail rotor to worry about).
Of course, this design is an affront to aerodynamic design, so I'd consider it 'good enough' if it could just fly. Flying gracefully would require a rather more powerful system, I think.
