Title: Swap Spline Gear?
Post by: ajayre on February 19, 2009, 12:18:48 AM
Is it possible to swap a 23 tooth spline gear on a GWS servo for a Hitec 24 tooth or Futaba 25 tooth spline gear? Are there conversion kits somewhere?

The reason I ask is that I want a 1/4" shaft on my GWS servo, like this one:

  http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_shaft_attachment.html (http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_shaft_attachment.html)

My GWS servo is this:

Any ideas?

thanks, Andy

From my experience GWS and Futaba servos have the same spline design so that you can interchange servo horns between them.

If they aren't compatible, chances are you won't be able to swap the gears out - the gears are made for the servo, so if a gear is just a little different from the original, the gear mesh will be messed up.

Thanks, although I am a bit confused. This discussion:

  http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=934716 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=934716)

seems to indicate that most GWS servos are compatible with JR servos. Then this page:

  http://www.rmfm.org/servo_arms.htm (http://www.rmfm.org/servo_arms.htm)

says that JR splines have 23 teeth. This matches with what the web page for my servo says. I'm very confused now.

looks like GWS varies. In the RC groupd thread you listed, two different GWS reps posted and they posted conflicting information (one said futaba is most common, other said JR). I would bring your servos to a hobby store and have them find which one your servos have.
