how much did the $50 bot cost you?
« on: January 08, 2009, 03:40:01 AM »
I recently completed my first bot along the $50 bot tutorial.

First, thanks be to admin and all who have made this possible.....

I am in australia, where parts cost a bit more.  I ended up paying $75 just for 2 servo's (after paying $30 for a pair that failed on modification from ebay.)

price list:
(AUD$)

servo's                    $75
ISP                          $160
ATMega8 x5          $30
misc                        $30

so just under AUD $300, which works out bout US$200.  of course, the biggest cost was the ISP AVRMKII which was not part of the original tutorial.  And I purchased all parts new.  The mcu's came from ebay.  Jaycar wants ~AUD$20 EACH!

My next bot will be a lot cheaper  :)

So just out of curiosity, how much have others built this for?  has anyone outspent me in their quest for a working ($50) robot?  anyone make one for under US$10? what has it cost in europe?

(note: this is in no way implying that the US$50 price tag is misleading in creating a basic robot)
I was so disappointed to learn that half the people I know are under average........but the other half more than make up for it.

I live in Australia and all in all it cost me around $70. but at the same time i spent a lot more getting my supply of misc components built up.

When you live in Australia you learn to order smart. where to buy certain things and where not to buy other. there is a lot of money to be saved ordering smart. I am sure that it is the same for many other countries, but we cant order from servo city and a few other online shops and shipping from the Robot Market place costs close to $50!

@Elijah5647; have you heard of a place called Little Bird Electronics? they stock lots of Sparkfun products and other robotics products, Australia based and shipping is only $8. and if you spend over $50 shipping is free! well worth a look of you have not seen it before.
