i was wondering,
my sister has a pillow that when it turns on about 6 little lights in it turn on then change color as you wait. so red, blue, pink..... so on and so forth.
my question is how does it change colors, and how does it do it at the same time. it doesn't have any circuity

It's obvious you haven't yet opened the device!!!
There is an RGB led in it... (Red - Green - Blue)
With various combinations you can get more colors as these are the basic colors...
For example with Red and Blue led shinning you get Pink or purple ans so on....
Some pictures will do for further help!!!

but how to you make them shine at the same time without a microcontroller

It's even possible to make a electronic watch by that way...
Still I think it must be a microcontroller.... as far as you haven't opened it yet...
Try figuring out this by this was...
Microcontrollers are not effected so much but electromagnetic fields as passive components and transistors...
Try having a cellphone near the device when working... Dial...
If it goes crazy it's sure it's not a microcontroller (or a good one)...
If it stops working like pausing or/and starting again then it's a micro behind the plastic cover!!!
