Title: Cajun Crawler (Segway with legs)
Post by: Admin on March 24, 2009, 07:10:46 AM
I would never recommend this design to anyone for a whole host of reasons, but I still felt it amusing and neat.

The following video is a documentary of sorts. The video shows the Cajun Crawler. It was a project that was completed for the Fall 08 semester at the University of Louisiana. The scooter was inspired by Theo Jansen's leg mechanism. Throughout our research, we found no application where Jansen's leg mechanism was used as a weight-bearing application or vehicle. The legs are made of standard 5052 Aluminum. The joints all contain deep-groove ball bearings. If you have any questions regarding it, please feel free to contact us. Thank you. The following links are videos we found that inspired us on this project:

That is an interesting design, though I almost didn't watch it due to the starting filming style >.<

Same here!

Also it seems like it falls forward very easy. I agree with admin about the design.

I wonder how I could get my hands on one of those to test out. It seems fun to drive, even though I have no idea how you will even turn it. I don't see any buttons for left, right, fast, slow.

Just out of curiosity, why?  It seems to run good.  It looks like it has two drill motors, speed controllers, and drill batteries.  Pretty sweet project, but i could think of a whole bunch of other things to make with the resources that they have :D.

Because wheels are easier, too many parts (more stuff to make and can break), complicated design, vibration issues, low efficiency . . . the list goes on :P

Just out of curiosity, why?

Simply...
BECAUSE THEY CAN.

For anyone who's interested, those legs are designed by a dutch artist called theo janssen.
They provide very stable walking patterns, but are only usable on flat terrain.
