I want to start building a robot with legs
It will be well documented , so I just wanna hear what you guys suggest
Should I build a biped , quadrapod , or hexapod ?
I understand the difficulties of each , but which one is "cooler" ?
-
I've always likes hexapods the most. It may be easier to give a quadrapod a cooler design, but in action hexapods will still be way cooler with much more fluid movements and more agility in general.
Bipeds are cool but i don't think they are that cool because I've never seen a small scale biped that walks properly.
That's only what i think, and i still think any legged robot is great and prefer that before wheeled robots.
Good luck with your project!
[edit]BTW, I'm working on a hexapod with a quite interesting design now. You should check this link out: http://www.lynxmotion.net/viewtopic.php?t=3938
Maybe you would like to build one of these as well. Would be awesome to have someone to discuss problems and solutions with :D

Hexapod it is :)
I'll begin the robot in two weeks or so , right after exams and such .
-
hey airman,, sure its the hexapod but there are many shapes for a hexapod.. there are round shaped,, rectangle shaped ,,etc
if you're looking for the COOOLER only then what about a 3DOF EACH LEG SPIDER :o
-
Spider bots have 8 legs
8*3=24 servos!!!! I don't have that much cash to spend on only one project.
-
If I had the cash I'd go for 8 legs. Octopods/Arachnopods FTW!
-
Do a hexapod with small foam wheels for feet so it can climb stairs like the SHRIMP robot.
-
I understand the difficulties of each , but which one is "cooler" ?
Here is my thoughts on walking robots . . . on flat surfaces, the wheel is by far the best choice. Its more efficient, and much simpler to make.
So the point I'm trying to get at is, the coolest option would be the one that lets your robot go where wheels can't go. Design your bot to climb things and go through really rough terrain! I've seen lots of hexapods and bipeds, but almost all fail beyond flat surfaces . . .
Asimo can only do perfectly flat surfaces, for example . . .
Just my thoughts ;D
-
OK so I've decided on 8 legs , and I'll try to design it to be all terrain
Construction is set tol begin in early July
keep on giving feedback
-
as long as you want it to be all terrain i guess you need 3DOF
got back to the 24 servos :P
-
yep
now i gotta get some cash
-
and think of the amps these babies would need ,, 10 amps?? :o

it'd be unlikely you would use all servos at the same time . . . so probably less, depending on weight/gaits . . . anyway, the Axon can handle it ;D

What I'm planning on doing for a robot of mine, soon coming up (I hope), is do what a car does, and buy one powerful motor an hook it up to a crankshaft or something like that and distribute the force to all the legs. But with the hexaped design, maybe delayers and servos WOULD be a better choice. Also...
In regards to the design, I think you should go for the "AT-TE" (All terrain Tactical enforcer) look, manufactured by Rothana Heavy Engineering from Star Wars:
(http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/d/df/All_Terrain_Tactical_Enforcer.jpg), and (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/thumb/0/0a/ATTE-ST.jpg/200px-ATTE-ST.jpg)
Also, if you could find some way to replicate its ability to climb vertical surfaces, that'd be awesome!
You can look it up on Wookiepedia:http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/ATTE (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/ATTE).
Of course, if you could also replicate the Anti-personel Blaster Cannons, that'd be really cool! ;)

My opinion is that all terrain legged robots are wicked, I already had plans to build one.
But I'm not convinced octapods are so much better than hexapods... They may be a bit better in stability etc. but they cost more... It's up to you if you think it's worth it Airman, personally I don't.

Allows for a heavier payload . . . if 6 can't handle your expected payload, you'll need more legs . . .
