Starter's Robots

Hey there,
I'm a newbie here and to the world of robots.I want to start with a basic robot to help me understand the principles of robotics. If it's possible I'm looking for a good starters package, which means it would be very helpful if that robot comes with a book discussing robotics in theory generally and also be a manual for building your robot.I want to learn both software and hardware basic robotic principles.I should also mention that I am in my first year studying mechanical engineering so I won't start from totally nothing.

How about the $50 Robot (now may cost $80) for the Robot Tutorials on this web site (click it in the upper right).

The Arduino is a fine microcontroller experimentation platform, and you can add motor controllers, or entire small robots, to it easily.
Check out the Zumo from Pololu for an example of a robot platform you can plug your Arduino into.
