major forum upgrade today
« on: November 28, 2011, 05:58:59 AM »
I did a major forum upgrade today, and obviously a lot of stuff is currently broken.

Please bear with me for the next day or so.

You like this look? ???

I hadn't 'fixed' the theme yet, it was basically the low-level stuff that got a huge upgrade.

well yeah..! it looks more neat and since blue is my favorite color, any forum with lots of blue is good... I just saw this new theme . ::) wasn't able to log in to SOR due to some reasons for a few days  >:(

(the last time i checked it was the same white background, with blue headings and all that..)

Will miss the old unique look :P

To nag with a request: can we get something at the top of the forum pages that takes us to the main SoR website (e.g. like the old forum had the "logo" at the top)?

Gertlex, yeap definitely.

At the moment however I'm just trying to get the darn anti-spammer defenses working again . . . so many things are broken now :-\

Looks good so far, Admin :)

Hopefully the little annoyances/breaks won't be too much trouble to fix up ;)

In the last hour I had to reinstall the forum *again*. But it appears all the basic stuff is now working (most importantly the anti-spammer defenses).

If you see any major bugs, report it here. Over the next few days I'm going to be fixing the look of the forum.

fyi, the SoR Chat is still not working properly grumble grumble . . .

It might take a week before things are back to 'normal'.

I may be missing it somewhere, but where is the mark forum read, or mark messages read...

Thanks

Kurt

P.S. - I do think the new look is a bit cleaner.

oh, I didn't think anyone used it so I removed it . . . oh well, I put it back just for you :P

btw, I don't like the title or the buttons at top, I was just toying around with different looks.

If anyone has artistic skills and free time, let me know!

Hi,

If anyone has artistic skills and free time, let me know!
How artistic, or perhaps I should ask, in what way artistic (buttons, backgrounds, logos, header/footers, graphics or something entirely different)?

One thing that changed for the worse IMO, is the number of replies and views in the same column - makes it harder to spot the posts with no replies.

Søren

1)

I'm still fixing things, mostly low-level hidden stuff you guys don't see.

I've also added two new anti-spam programs, including a firewall (anti-SQL injection and anti-DOS stuff, etc), and anti-bot questions (what is the color of a pink elephant?). The one day the anti-spammer defenses were down, 25 of those buggers managed to get in . . .

2)

Question: is there anything about the old forum you guys liked that is missing or sucks in this new version? Is there any must-have feature you've seen somewhere else that you'd like here? Speak now while I'm in the mood to implement it.  :P

3)

I had an issue with the old Skype mod for this forum. If you wish to re-add your Skype info to your profile,
1) go to Profile -> Forum Profile
2) scroll to the very BOTTOM of the page
3) enter your info into the Skype box

4)

I'm up for pretty much anything. The title and the links at the top are hideous, in my opinion :P

Suggestions on colors and link designs are also welcome.

I don't remember what it looked like before, lol . . . but I've added this high up on my to-do list.

I'm (slowly) trying to sketch out a few ideas.

But if it's pressing and you want several different ideas to choose from, why not tap into the collective talent mass and make it a regular competition, complete with a deadline and such?

I don't remember what it looked like before, lol . . . but I've added this high up on my to-do list.
They were in different columns (side by side).

Soeren, what if I write code that puts the replies number in bold if it has zero replies?

Oh, I had disabled it . . . didn't think anyone was still using it lol . . . anyway, I re-enabled it for you.

btw, any modern browser (Chrome/Firefox) has automatic spell checking as you type. :P

i saw on a car club site i belong to a "garage" section for our cars. maybe you could make something like that but for our bots? it was mainly just attached to our profiles, but there was a section to just search through the "garages" and take a look at what they have going on.

it's just an idea!

if you need more info on what i'm talking about...just send an e-mail!

I work on cars and I love computers
robots seems like the best convergence of the two.

I'm having trouble with the CDN I'm using, resulting in some of your IP addresses getting confused with blacklisted spammer IP addresses.

Long story short, send me an email if you find yourself suddenly blocked out. I'm likely to decide to remove the CDN in the next few days, unless I can resolve the issue . . .

Unable to download a zip file from a forum post
« Reply #26 on: December 12, 2011, 11:11:20 AM »
Hi,

Thanks for your site and forum.

I'm trying to download the zip file that's attached to this forum post:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=3292.msg25198#msg25198

The zip file name is "50buck bot.zip"

When I click on the link to download the zip file, my browser, Firefox, offers to open or download a file called "index.php"  but does not seem to know anything about a zip file.

I'm mindful of the fact that computer error usually means user error.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Regards,
Dabbler

Dabbler, it works for me . . . I'm on Chrome.

I just left-clicked it, and it downloaded as a zip.
