Title: Need help for college project
Post by: kumar6840 on August 12, 2008, 05:28:31 AM
Hey guys,
I'm Siva from India doing my final year in Electronics and Communication Engineering. As a part of the final year we(a team of four) need to do a project on any area of our interest. We've chose robotics even though we didn't have any courses about it.I suggested it because there is something about robotics that reels me in.I haven't had the chance to build one yet.I've gone through dozens and dozens of sites but I can't get any real source of how to get things done. Now you may think that if I've gone through them I should know where to get the parts and what to build right?.

Here are the problems I face,
1.There is nothing like radioshack, servocity from where I can buy these stuff.
2.There's not much industrial micro controllers and other components available here like in the US.
3.Many components are too costly over here.
4.I need to get this project done in a max of 50days or so.
5.The total budget can come around $400(in US dollars)

So naturally everyone in my college is suggesting me to go for some other project. But I'm not going to do so because I want to do something that'll be absolutely amazing compared to others' projects.

Now there are some things that I do have,
1.There are guys who make the robot structures if we give them the CAD design for it.
2.If I could come up with some kind of a robot that can be used on regular basis in my college and if my head of the department accepts it to be useful, then I can get a grant for it.(this would help me out a lot).

As for now I've thought of coming up with a PC controlled robot. But this would not help me get that grant because my college already has a lots of securities and cameras :-\ .

So please help to come up with something that meets all these criteria.Hope you guys would help me out.

How about an improved version of my butler robot?

I already have an improved version in the works , but I won't be revealing details until I'm fully done.

thanks for your reply but what can I improvise in that?.Also it would be great if you could tell me something that would take care of the grant part.

well watch the video by that link I sent you and you can see how it can be used on a daily basis

Some stuff to improve:
Make the robot look nicer
Make the robot lighter ( use plastic)
Make a better drink pouring system
Make more degrees of freedom in the arms

I'll be happy to help you if you choose to build a butler robot

that is great but the thing is,it has to be useful on daily basis in college. That is, after finishing it ,I have to leave it back in college so that they can use it.So??

also don't forget the 50 days maximum duration for completing the project.

It shouldn't take more than 50 days. Remember I wrote up a step by step guide for it

You can leave it back I guess as long as someone remembers to charge it or if you do self charging

There might be a different robot out there you can build , I'll think about it later today
