Title: Cheap Servos - worth it?
Post by: Half Shell on November 28, 2008, 11:00:20 AM
Hello everyone!

My friend came across this deal for servos and asked me what I thought.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350128113282&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching

It comes out to 6.50 per servo, which isn't bad. But the problem is I can't find any reviews or forum posts about these servos via Google. On top of that I've had bad experiences with TowerPro before. On the flip side these are nicely priced for a good amount of torque.

What does everyone else here think?

Cheap servos usually have a worse centering ability, but other than that they are great.

I would look up the servos on this UnitedHobbies site, especially this one, for a $1.5 more, you get almost 12Kg! https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2&Product_Name=HXT_10kg_Servo_(metal_gear) (https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2&Product_Name=HXT_10kg_Servo_(metal_gear))

And this one is a better version of the one on E-Bay:
https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3743&Product_Name=HXT_6.9kg_/_39.2g_/_.16sec_Twin_bearing_servo (https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3743&Product_Name=HXT_6.9kg_/_39.2g_/_.16sec_Twin_bearing_servo)

Dead links... :-(.

not dead, you just have to add an exception to their certificate.

For one of the servos I was reading through the feedback and saw a warning that similar servos are sold on ebay and they come from the low quality batches from the same manufacturer. Seems like the manufacturer quality control decides which ones are to be sold to chinese people and which ones to be exported. But even from the "good ones" there are a few with centering problems or die quickly. I also think they are sensitive to the quality of the control signal (probably the receiver). Perhaps not good for a biped, but good enough for a gripper or a pan/tilt system, especially if you dont try to center them from the extremes. They are also easy to hack for continuous rotation.

Read the comments on the servo, it appears to have great reviews. But no reviewer appears to have done durability testing or actually measure the torque (or any quantitative measurement).

I'd say they are safe to buy despite the certificate warning. ;D

That being said, nothing will stop some chinese guy from buying el-cheapo servos and replacing the servo sticker to claim its an expensive servo ;D
(so if you see a normally expensive item offered for cheap, investigate)
