Title: paintball robot project
Post by: Shaz Strife on July 25, 2011, 06:12:53 PM
i was planning to build a paintball robot for tournament as my final year project. i want the paintball gun to be able to move left and right and i want to build it using a RC car chassis and i want it to be able to be controlled by game console.anyone can help me choose the right component and maybe give a hint.

Geeze... is it final project time already?

Using an RC car chassis (and electronics) is an easy way to get the robot moving.  All you really have to do is figure out how to move the paintball gun and how to control it.

You'll probably want a couple servos to control the mount the gun sits on.  How big and how powerful I don't know, that all depends on how much force is required to move the gun and how quickly you want to move it.

How do you plan on aiming this gun?  By watching the bot?  That'll probably be a bit hard (as you won't always be behind the gun).

I believe (don't quote me here) that you can use an old PS2 controller with webbot lib and an axon.  Someone was even talking about getting a PS3 controller with bluetooth working.  Do you plan on having a wired controller, or wireless?

yeah what a bummer...well i was plan to use a wireless one...thnx for the reply i think you got a point there, it will be difficult to aim the gun by just watching at it...maybe i didn't think it through...i still a noob you know...

You could mount a pinhole camera on the sight of the gun.

A guy in this video did something similar.    http://www.sparkfun.com/news/560 (http://www.sparkfun.com/news/560)

You could also do semi autonomous blob tracking and then once you give it a voice command such as "fire"  it will shoot until you say stop.  Just thought I'd throw that idea out there.  It might be crazy  ;D

Just a thought, but if you used an RC car without steering (that could rotated on the spot) you could probably scrap rotation on the gun. This way you could mount a cam on the car and aim using position of the car. Maybe even add a tilt adjustment.
