will this crimp tool work?
« on: August 04, 2008, 07:55:31 PM »
I have 3 questions

1.  http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=WM9900-ND
Will the above tool work to crimp molex connectors found in the wire connector tutorial.
http://www.societyofrobots.com/electronics_wire_connector.shtml

I'm debating between the really cheap one listed above and this one http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1277, which would be $34 after shipping.

2.  What's a good digikey substitution for the extra housing for the male servo wire extension connector shown in this tutorial (which is really good btw)
http://www.hansenhobbies.com/products/connectors/Connectors.pdf

3.  Is there a good substitution for servo wire (also found in the tutorial listed above) on digi-key?

doesn't anyone have an answer on at least 1 of the questions?  The problem for me is that I'm not familiar with the technical terms necessary to search for the parts and answer my questions (despite my hours of trying to educate myself).  If I were, I would simply do it myself.

Hi
1. Either of the crimpers should work. The more expensive one is nice because it has a ratchet which insures that you tighten the pins properly and will probably give a better crimp (its also easier on the hands). The flip side is that the cheaper one wont give you as good of a crimp but it will be more general and allow you to crimp other pin types a bit easier.

2. Use the admins tutorial to find the female side and the male side should have a similiar part number on digikey. If you want to make an adapter look on digikey for "headers". Just check the pin spacing. So if your connector has .1" spacing make sure the header has .1" spacing.

3. For the most part any wire of the correct gauge will work. You can buy a spool of 3 conductor ribbon cable if you want to be able to make a lot of extenders, cables, etc..

A side note is that molex refers to the manufacturer, another name for the connectors is IDC. A lot of the generic connectors will go by that name.
