Title: torque of stepper motor?
Post by: yokoma on April 03, 2008, 08:33:01 AM
hi
i am using a stepper motor in my project which must rotate a 12cm wheel made of wood. the motor is 5v bi-polar. i am supplying it wiht 500mA, 9v throuhg the L298 h-bridge IC. But when the motor is working any small force on the wheel stops the motor! and it seems that something is rotaing inside the motor in this case!
what is worse is that i need the motor to carry some light loads, so if it is stopping as easy as that, can it move the load?
how can i solve this problem so that the motor can rotate the wheel with more power?

Use a different motor... Steppers are great for accuracy, but not for power... a gear-head DC motor is a much better choice.

Sounds like a power issue. What is the required current for the stepper? Did you actually measure the 500mA?
