Title: Robot control with IPhone
Post by: bhsmith on October 19, 2009, 06:27:42 AM
How would you be able to contol a bot with an IPhone.  Here, http://apple-phone-hacks.com/iphone-controlled-r2d2-robot/ (http://apple-phone-hacks.com/iphone-controlled-r2d2-robot/) is an example of what I am talking about.  Would you have to create a IPhone specific app to be able to do this or are there other ways.

If I had to guess, I'd say that he probably has his own app of some kind, and that it is transmitted to the robot either by bluetooth or wireless.  I don't believe iPhone/iTouch apps are that hard to make.  If you can figure out how to program your robot, you should be fine in making an iPhone app.

I'm actually working on an app for my Palm Pre to control my robot/view data with. I'm having to hack to the core of the operating system though because the native code does not support specific data transmission over bluetooth, at least as far as I can tell.

I know there are some apps for controlling certain robots.  I think there is one for the lego mindstorm.  I haven't looked into how to make Iphone apps yet.  I have no idea how it is done, but it is something that I'm going to look into as my future project.  If the apps aren't hard to make then I may start working on one then.

Hack a day has a stack of iPhone hacks, most of these have links to tutes or source code too.

You're probably going to have to jailbreak the phone, since apple is an asshole when it comes to apps.

For others interested in controlling their robots using their phones, I highly suggest you use an android phone. It's all open source and you can put your own apps on it, so it's pretty easy to program for.
