Army Tank
« on: September 09, 2007, 06:17:09 PM »
Is it feasible to build a tank large enough(the size of a skyscraper, the sixe of several city blocks or bigger) to withstand all weapons created by humans except the atom bomb.

possible, but not practical
Problems making the $50 robot circuit board?

To ed1380: What practical problems are you talking about?

Tools: lack of large enough cranes, large enough molds

Time: by the time you finish it, it will be outdated

Resources: the cost will be extremely prohibitive, and the money could be used to buy a huge fleet of fighter jets, which will be alot more capable

And of course, only having just one, or a few, makes it easy to target them.

To Nyx: How long is it going to take to build it? What is the cost going to be? How will it become outdated?

seems like youre actually thinking of building it Warlock.....

also one major setback of a tank : It can only move over land. So wherever you build it, thats where it can fight. You build it in USA, you can only attack places in North and South America.

It would probably take as long as it would take to build 2 and half skyscrapers. I would say like 15 years. The reason for that is because a ton of research would have to be put in.( big treads, huge motors, etc.) The cost will be in the billions.
It will be outdated because technology advances exponentially.

Also, just because its big doesn't mean its invinsible.

If you want to withstand all weapons of mankind INCLUDING the atom bomb ,  build an underground bomb shelter. It would be cheaper( but still expensive for the common citizen).
Check out the Roboduino, Arduino-compatible board!

What about giant aircraft and naval vessels?

Develop the following items:
1) Infinite energy supply
2) Energy Weapon
3) Energy Shields

and slap them all into a jet. Your also going to need one hell of an electric motor. If you can do all that, you can destroy whatever the hell you want and no one would be able to do anything about it.

You also have to realise that tanks are low profile (in terms of height) for a reason: it gives them a better ability to hide. If you build a huge tank, this ability is not there anymore, which kind of defeats the purpose... And in the end, no matter how big the tank is, it stands little chance against a rain of GPS guided missiles fired from aircraft carriers 500 miles away... Or a fleet of fighter jets. In the end, it's just not cost effective, and does not bring any advantage.

And everything has a weak spot. Just ask Steven Segal and MacGayver!

You lie H3ro! Segal and MacGyver have no weaknesses! And neither does Chuck Norris! :-P

but everything else does, its just a matter of finding it =)

Segal and MacGyver < Norris

What I meant is that they always find the weakness of things. They them self have non.

This is getting way OT  :P

Off topic? The topic is building a tank the size of a city block, I dont really think it matters? lol

But to get it back on "topic":

If you could design all the stuff and have all kinds of countermeasures for missiles and stuff, just one of those things would be able to do some serious damage so if you built a squadron of lets say 9 of em, built some crazy ridiculous method for their computers to talk to each other and develop a quick plan of action, they could probably dominate unmatched.

Made my day :D

An other problem is how do you transport the tank around? Normally they put the tanks on trucks and drive them where they need them to save fuel/maintains cost/not damage infrastructure. Cant really see how that would work in this case?

And how do you move it from the factory?

Super Tank X2000 fired its massive 20^4 caliber machine gun, but he was to fast. The main gun also missed. The critical moment had finally come, he had seen it in his dreams long time ago. This was what he had been training for. The only thing he has lived for after they killed his wife and child 2 years ago. He jump, and landed perfectly on the top of the big barrel. I didnt take long before he was sliding down the massive barrel.

5min later...Boom, Bamm, Boooom!

The tank was just a flaming wrack now. The world was safe again, but he had not found peace with himself. Chuck Norris walked into the sunset, hoping for a better day to come, where he could find love. But inside he know it was to much hate in the world, and he would have to kill again. Just a matter of time....
