Title: state of spam on SoR
Post by: Admin on July 03, 2011, 05:12:35 PM
I bet very few of you have ever seen spam on SoR. This is because I spend almost 30 min/day fighting them off using both automated and manual methods. I figured you guys would be interested in basic statistics of the badies out there.

spammers blocked by:
direct IP bans, ~2000
blacklisted bots, 84441
attempts by unknown bots, 13418
manual detection, 1822
various registration puzzles, unknown quantity (but probably a lot)

The average number of spammers that get through my automated defenses per day is ~3. The average spammer these days does what is called 'forum profile spam', where they sign up and never post but leave spam links in their user profile. If and when they post, and some times they post relevant thoughts, their signature with the spam link gets posted with it. So report any suspicious signatures.

I try to report everything I see!

You do a very good job keeping the spammers at bay admin!

Hehe, nice.

My blog I've had up for 1.5 years now has had

3,759 attempts
3 false positives (sorry Ro-Bot-X)
2 false negatives

not bad for an automated system.
