Title: about 6th SoR Robot Tutorial Contest?
Post by: voyager2 on August 25, 2010, 04:55:47 AM
Do we need to use an Axon for this?
I'd love to do a written tutorial on photographing robots...
But...
1) I don't have an Axon

2) How do you use an Axon in a photography tutorial...
unless you take pictures of the Axon...

I'll apply for an account now...

There is another thread on this discussion

you already need to own an axon, and make a video tutorial that features the robot.

It doesn't actually need to be a tutorial, just features the Axon in some way in your project. An Axon tutorial is desired but not required ;D

Yes!

But does it still need to be a video?

But does it still need to be a video?

The very first line in the instructions :P
Quote
1) Make an educational video featuring the Axon

And actually, if your video is really fun and cool, it doesn't need to be that educational.

Does a long animated GIF classify as a video...

Maybe it's time to break out GIF construction set unregistered and make a model Axon out of card...
That's educational, fun and it features an Axon, i suppose.
And I can export it as AVI.
I hope you don't mind PhotoBucket video hosting...

Why does it need to be animated gifs? ???

I think you guys are missing the spirit of what Admin wants. Usually the contests are educational (and this one can be too); but this time he wants (I dare say it) a 'commercial' for the Axon.

A "Ooo look how cool that robot is, i want to build one like it. What's that? I need an Axon to build it? I'll have to get one because it looks simple and powerful".

Animated Axons aren't going to capture that.

Some people don't like that he is hosting a contest for such a goal, but those people are selfish. For all that Admin does for us, for how he gives his life to this site, he has every right to ask us to help with a little advertising for the Axon.

That said I'm banking on winning by default because I choose to put my effort towards a tutorial, which isn't going to get people interested in Axons, just teach them how to use it. One decent cool robot video will blow me out of the water.

I understand what you mean Madsci, and I did think that it was a good way of selling Axons for Admin...
An Axon to scale, in card, would be nice to stick on a trophy stand, while you're using an "original"

@Admin I don't have a video camera, but i can take still pictures and put them into GIF construction set.
Then I can export as AVI

Invite a friend over 'to see a robot', and casually suggest to bring along a camera . . . little does he know :P

FYI Windows Movie Maker can accept image files, plus it lets you snaze stuff up for video better than GIF construction set.

I know about movie maker, but it is painful to use (having 1GB of ram has downfalls)
Non of my friends own video cameras, I am the resident Geek in my street...
I do have a Digital camera but videos are 1 minute long, and like i said, Movie Maker hates 1GB of ram...

But I shall try (and likely fail).
The temptation of free stuff...

After viewing the rules page, I think that, even if Madsci wins 1st place I'd end up in 2nd or 3rd place!
That is if I can pull this of in 5 days...
and if no-one else enters...

Man, John has got a tough choice to make. Didn't expect someone to come in at the last minute with fancy music and animations!

Any idea when we will know the outcome Admin?

I'm gonna be honest with you guys . . . Hawaii00000 threw in a fast ball there . . .

I'm gonna take a week or two to really think about this one.

That said, voyager2 gets/deserves honorable mention. Not exactly a 'robot video', and nothing like any of us expected, but I was definitely amused by it :)

Honorable mention is a win in my eyes.
It was amusing making a video of a (dodgy) Axon II replica...

GIVE ME MY AXON!
Just kidding, I couldn't  resist!
Title: Suggestion for 7th SoR Robot Tutorial Contest!
Post by: voyager2 on September 03, 2010, 03:17:01 AM
I had an idea for the 7th SoR Tutorial Contest (there is going to be a 7th one, right?)
How about having a LEGO robotics competition!
But we can use any LEGO kit that was ever produced!
Might work, but I'd have an unfair advantage, I have a mountain of LEGO and 4 Mindstorms kits...
